That’s why I don’t enter the intersection unless it’s already clear on the other side of the box, even if I do have the green.

I think a lot of the issues here are sequential intersections that aren't timed correctly. I'm on the west side of town and just avoid Wadsworth during rush hour entirely because it's become a complete cluster over the last couple years.

I drive a lot in downtown SF. Barring something like an emergency vehicle or an accident I don’t see how you ever block the box “accidentally”. I guess you have to accept that just because the light is green, or you waited a while, even if you’re the very first car at the light, you might not get to go that particular cycle of the light. From what I see in SF, that’s counterintuitive to a lot of people. In NYC, on the other hand, where you get significant fines for doing so (and traffic is very heavy), no one blocks the box. It’s really just a problem with expectation setting.

Wow, how hard is it to not pull into the intersection until there’s room? You and people like you are causing the traffic back up that leaves you blocking the box.

Also in Denver, same issue. I never try to, and work really hard not to, but inevitably I end up doing at least once, usually on 15th st.

Same with Kipling, Colfax, 32nd, 38th, any street downtown, ect.

Everything is crazy around here between 3 and 7 on weekdays. I70 is especially bad in my area (38th and Kipling) anytime after 3 Mon-Fri.

Here in the U.K. we’re taught to not enter a junction unless the exit is clear (there are some who ignore it but hey).

A green light isn’t a ‘right, go go go’. I green light is ‘proceed if safe to do so’. If the exit isn’t clear or the traffic looks to be slowing then you need to exercise judgement and proceed (or stop) if safe to do so.

We also have yellow box junctions where it’s actually a traffic offence to stop inside unless you are making a right turn (I guess the U.S. version would be left turns).

Kinja'd!!!

But really every junction should be treated like a yellow box junction.

Why would someone pull forward as soon as the light turns green if they

A) Don’t have the green arrow giving them right of way

B) There’s a shitton of cars in the oncoming lane

I always just chill in the turn lane until I see an opening coming down the road, at which point I start creeping forward so I can get through it as soon as possible and give the guy behind me a chance. And even if the light turns yellow and someone is stuck “blocking the box” just turn as soon as it turns red and it’s no harm, no foul. The other lanes don’t turn green the femtosecond the light turns red for the person turning anyways. This isn’t even bad planning it’s just the result of heavy traffic and impatient people.

There’s a small town that I drive through sometimes that had this issue: two sequential intersections with poorly timed lights. This past spring, the town started major roadwork, which closed one of the crossroads at one of the intersections. In the process, they changed the traffic light from cycling normally to continuous flashing yellow for the main road, and flashing red for the remaining open crossroad. During rush hour, it literally takes me 10 minutes less time now to get through that town.
